The 5 types of overhead or garage doors
A swanky home with a fancy entry door can fail to impress if the attached overhead garage door is not up to mark. The wide expansiveness of the front-facing attached garage is what contributes equally to a home’s curb appeal. Magnolia Glass & Mirror shares the five types of overhead doors homeowners can choose from.
1. Sectional Garage Doors
Sectional garage doors are made up of panel sections that are connected with hinges. These horizontal sections bend at the hinges to allow the door to roll up and curve to follow the contour of the front of the garage to the ceiling.
A pair of high-tension springs above the opening is attached to cables to operate the door and hold it from drifting down when partially open.
These doors can be made from steel, wood, aluminum, or glass. Although aluminum is most cost-effective, it is also easily dented. Wood requires upkeep but can be painted or stained to exactly match the home facade. Glass offers a modern appearance that is unparalleled. Most of these overhead doors can be customized to include window inserts, hardware, textures, and colors. They are very energy-efficient and offer great insulation.
Sectional garage doors are easy to operate and are inexpensive. And they are now electrically operated for ease.
2. Roll-Up Garage Doors
More popular in commercial settings than residential, roll-up garage doors are simple designs for areas with limited ceiling space. Ideally made with 2”-3” steel slat sections that roll around a barrel above the door opening, roll-up, or coiling doors are capable of withstanding heavy usage or enclosed to prevent rust, corrosion, and freezing. These doors offer a safe-saving design and the convenience of an electrically operated door. The upfront costs are higher than that of a sectional design.
3. Slide to the Side Garage Doors
The slide to the side garage doors bend to one side of the garage and sit parallel to the wall. These are used for garages with little headroom or to utilize the headroom for storage. These doors do not require balancing springs and have a built-in retractable motor for automated operation.
4. Side-Hinged Garage Doors
These doors with equal-sized leaves open outwards to provide extra space inside the garage and are a great solution for garages where access to wall space or utility boxes is required near the door entrance. These doors offer a completely different look than the average overhead sectional garage door as the doors come in sets that open from the middle of the bay opening. They resemble large barn doors and are typically made of wood, although more commercial-type galvanized steel doors are also available.
Installation becomes simpler with this type of garage door as these can be bought pre-hung in a frame or as they are to fit an existing opening.
5. Tilt-Up/Up Garage Doors
The tilt-up garage doors don’t have sections like slide to the side and sectional garage doors. When they open, they tilt up and into the garage. There are two types of tilt-up garage doors:
- Tilt-up canopy garage door: The tilt-up canopy garage doors are made of one solid piece with a pivoting hinge mechanism that helps tilt the door up into the garage. This door sits parallel to the garage ceiling and extends past the facade of the house when the door is open.
- Tilt-up retractable garage door: Unlike the canopy garage doors, these doors are suspended independently from the frame, so they do not protrude past the front of the house. They take more space than the canopy garage doors.
These types of garage doors are traditionally more expensive and cumbersome to operate than sectional garage doors.
